How does teeth whitening in Glasgow work?

The way teeth whitening treatment works depends on the avenue you go down, and when choosing a treatment, you should make sure it addresses the type of tooth staining you have.

There are two main types of staining:

  • Intrinsic – These stains occur inside your tooth enamel and occur as a result of antibiotic use, high fluoride exposure, and even genetics. They can be harder to remove, so you may need to  use the in-practice whitening route.
  • Extrinsic – Extrinsic stains, on the other hand, occur on the outer surface of the teeth and appear as a result of consuming too much tea/coffee and artificial food colourings and smoking, among other things. Depending on the extent of your discolouration, at-home whitening treatments are the ideal solution to help you achieve a pearly white smile.

Both at-home and in-practice treatments involve painting a teeth-whitening gel onto the teeth.

The active ingredient in the gel is a concentration of either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which penetrates the enamel and changes the colour of the dentin (the layer of the tooth that sits beneath the enamel), or removes stains from the enamel itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most people, teeth whitening produces excellent results. But, teeth whitening won't lighten teeth with dental restorations. It only works on natural teeth and superficial surface stains.

Teeth whitening Glasgow can exacerbate sensitive teeth, so if you suffer from sensitivity, your private dentist may advise against the treatment.

Whitening treatments are also not recommended for pregnant or nursing women because the impact of the whitening chemicals on the foetus or breast-feeding baby is unknown.

Many of our teeth whitening treatments are designed for use at home. If you opt for home-based whitening, you will still need to attend an initial appointment. Your dentist will assess your teeth and gums to ensure you are suitable for the treatment.

They will also take an impression of your teeth and gums and have a custom-fit whitening tray made for you. Then, the treatment itself can take place on your own time and in the comfort of your own home.

Once you have your whitening tray, you can also purchase additional tubes of the whitening gel to top up your treatment as needed.

Teeth whitening in Glasgow is not a permanent solution for stained teeth. Your enamel remains porous, so food, drinks, and tobacco can still stain your teeth.

Your dentist can provide you with aftercare advice and recommend touch-up products you can use to keep your smile bright.

You can extend the lifespan of your teeth whitening procedure by practising good oral hygiene - which means brushing and flossing regularly - and visiting your dental hygienist for regular cleanings
